The Pauper Gauntlet

Welcome to the Pauper Gauntlet, Season Three!

Season Two recap: http://mtgolibrary.blogspot.se/2015/02/final-results-of-second-season-of.html

For more information on what happened in Season One, please read here: http://magicgatheringstrat.com/2014/06/the-pauper-gauntlet-season-one-2013/

What is the Pauper Gauntlet?
  • The Pauper Gauntlet is a competition between Pauper decks (not players) where the decks try to survive as long as possible. Every round decks are eliminated if they lose. The rounds get harder and harder (see below).
  • In the end, one deck will do what Stompy did in the second season and be the last remaining deck in the Gauntlet.
  • The Pauper Gauntlet is quite casual and meant to be taken as light entertainment.
How can you get involved in the Pauper Gauntlet?
  • You can watch the videos on the YouTube channels MagicGatheringStrat and MagicGatheringStrat2
  • You can read articles about the Gauntlet on this blog or on MagicGatheringStrat.com
  • You can brew a deck and submit it to the Gauntlet in the comments below
  • You can submit a deck you like to see played in the Gauntlet (that you perhaps did not brew yourself) in the comments below
  • You can champion a deck and win prizes. This will be detailed in my November 22nd blog post here when the list of all decks is known. You can not become the champion of a deck before November 22nd.

Sponsors
The main sponsor of the Pauper Gauntlet is Mtgotickets. The winning champion will receive 100 bot credits on the mtgotickets bots on Magic Online.  This season is brought to you by mtgotickets.com.

The Pauper Gauntlet also exists because of the help of mtgolibrary.com and magicgatheringstrat.com.

Other important sponsors of the Pauper Gauntlet are you, the patrons of MagicGatheringStrat. If you enjoy the Pauper Gauntlet consider becoming a patron of MagicGatheringStrat at  https://www.patreon.com/magicgatheringstrat

Submit a deck for the Pauper Gauntlet
You will need to submit a link to your deck list including a sideboard plan and mulligan tips in the comments below.

  • Your deck is submitted for possible entry into the Pauper Gauntlet by posting in the comments below (and nowhere else).
  • Your deck must have a deck list available on a web site that I can link to. There are several such services. Here is one: http://deckstats.net  . Include that link in your post in the comments below.

  • I need to repeat that apparently. YOU CAN NOT SUBMIT A DECKLIST in the comments below. You have to submit a link to a decklist. My article on November 22nd will be a list of all the decks and links to them. That will be the single most read article of The Pauper Gauntlet and it can't contain deck lists (only links) because it would be way too long

  • You should include a sideboard plan to help me play the deck. The better you make the sideboard plan, the better my chances are to win with the deck. Remember that a majority of Magic duels are played after sideboarding. Here is a good example of a template for a sideboard plan: http://magicgatheringstrat.com/2014/07/pauper-gauntlet-competitor-13-stompy/
  • Your deck is more likely to be approved if it is unique (no similar deck is already approved), if it has community interest, if it has achieved results in Daily Events or Premier Events, if you have a sideboard plan and if you have tips about playing the deck.

  • You can submit a deck until noon GMT+2 November 17th 2015 in the comments to this blog post. If you submit later, your deck will not be in the third season of the Pauper Gauntlet.
  • I have the final say whether a deck is approved or not.
  • The comments to this blog post is the only way to submit a deck to the Pauper Gauntlet. If your deck is submitted anywhere else, it will not be entered in the Pauper Gauntlet.
  • The list of the 15 decks pre-approved for the second season of the Pauper Gauntlet can be found here: http://magicgatheringstrat.com/2015/11/the-pauper-gauntlet-starts-today/ They are the top 10 decks from last year and the top 4 decks from the Pauper Rogue Cup (and a deck voted in by the players at that tournament) in Spain.
  • You do not have to have access to Magic Online to submit a deck. In fact, several brewers were not on Magic Online for the last season. After all, you don't play your own deck in the Pauper Gauntlet. I play all decks.
  • If you make a video playing the deck, that makes it more likely to be approved for the Gauntlet. You can get a free 30-day trial of the recording software I use here: http://www.techsmith.com/download/snagit/  (No, I do not get anything for promoting them)
  • Do not forget to include a sideboard plan with your deck. Take the top 15 decks in the Pauper metagame (http://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper#online) and write down exactly which cards you would take out of your deck against every single deck (and which cards you would bring in).

Some tips on brewing for Pauper
I made this video with David Shaffer in 2013. It contains some useful tips about brewing aggro, control and combo in Pauper. It explains many things that are good to think about when brewing, including why two-color aggro decks have huge problems in the format.

Here is all the information about Season Three in a video. I will recap below.

The rules
  • Whatever happens in the Paupet Gauntlet happens. There are no takebacks.
  • Every deck is played by the same player to make it fair (me).
  • Every deck plays one match each round
  • The first two rounds are double elimination, i.e. a deck has to lose both round one and round two to get eliminated. A deck that won in round one does not play in round two but is immediately qualified for round three.
  • Every round after round two is single elimination. Once a deck loses, it is eliminated from the Pauper Gauntlet.
  • If all remaining decks are eliminated in one round, they all advance to the next round.
  • The last remaining deck wins the Pauper Gauntlet S03
  • All the details about the competition and being the champion of a deck (and winning 100 bot credits from mtgotickets.com) will be posted here on November 22nd.
  • The details of the rounds are presented below
  • The opponent is the first person that joins the match on Magic Online. I intend this to be random but if people search me out to play me, that is fine with me.
  • Whenever Magic Online says I win (I win after playing, opponent leaves etc) the deck advances to the next round.
  • This year at least one card has to be played by either player for the match to count. I.e. instant quitters does not mean a deck advances to the next round.
  • There will be a voteback after round 4
  • If there is a banning, brewers are allowed to update their decks or eliminate their decks if they feel the deck is now unplayable.
  • Brewers are not allowed to update their deck lists if there are no bannings or other really good reasons (making an error in deck construction to begin with is not a good reason)
  • No more than 100 decks will be approved for the second season of the Pauper Gauntlet.
  • If you have any questions, please watch the video above If your question is not answered there, feel free to ask it in the comments. Please do not try to change the structure of the Pauper Gauntlet now. There will be an opportunity to evaluate the format after the Gauntlet is finished (as there was for Seasons One and Two).
The rounds
I will play the rounds in the following environments. The idea is that winning will get harder and harder.

Round 1-2: Any practice room on Magic Online except the Tournament Practice room (the hardest)
Round 3-11: The Tournament Practice Room on Magic Online
Round 12-15: The two-man queues on Magic Online
Round 16: A League for each deck. The deck(s) that gets the best results in the event advances to the next round.
Round 17-inf: The Tournament Practice Room on Magic Online

I changed round 16 to Leagues after Pauper Daily Events, 8-mans and Premier Events were removed on Nov 25, 2015.

How can you follow the Pauper Gauntlet?
  • You can watch videos on youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat or youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat2
  • For your convenience all videos will be added to the Pauper Gauntlet Season Three playlist on youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat
  • I will be a host of the MagicGatheringStrat podcast talking about the Pauper Gauntlet every week with Brennon & Sam. The MagicGatheringStrat podcast is available on Itunes or on magicgatheringstrat.com and youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat
  • Every match will be posted on the @MagicGathStrat twitter account
  • There will be a blog post here every Sunday with the results of the previous week
How long will this take?
It will take as long as it takes.

What if I make a stupid play mistake?
Well, this video answers that question. I am by no means a perfect player and there will be mistakes. The brewer can help by making an extensive sideboard plan and providing tips & tricks for playing the deck. (This video is from Season One but it is still the policy on play mistakes)

  1. I would like to suggest the Mono White Control deck.
I've played a lot with it and feel like it's a very stable and good working deck in the Pauper meta and would like to see what it can do in the Pauper Gauntlet.

Here's a decklist with the sideboard:

    1. The deck needs a sideboard plan with detailed notes about what to take out against certain decks (and what to bring in).

Here is an example with the bare minimum sideboard plan. I do prefer a much more detailed one. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bant-presence/

    2. There actualy was a MWC deck in season two. It looked nothing like this though. What is control in it? It just looks like a token based White Weenie deck (and I am pretty sure we can not avoid one of those in the Gauntlet :) )

  2. I built Tobias's Orzhov Tron deck a while ago because it seemed fun. I've been doing OK, but haven't played enough to have good SB plans yet. Just putting it up for consideration.

I'd love to see Turbo Exhume of course, but I don't know how to play it very well so I'll let somebody else bring the info :P

    1. I hope Tobias will submit Turbo Exhume. Naturally he has first go on his own decks. I don't know if he is about to submit Orzhov Tron but if he will not, you can submit your build for consideration. I will insist on a sideboard plan now. Even one constructed without testing is better than me improvising while doing a video. Much better in fact.

  4. Hello Dan,

Very happy to hear the deck submission has started. I built this BR controll deck for the pauper gauntlet:

I hope you give it a chance! Have fun testing it ;)

PS: i tried to comment before but they don't show up. Sorry if that results in a multiple post.

    1. That is one fantastic writeup with a nice looking sideboard plan and play instructions. I guess we need at least one Blightning deck in the Gauntlet and I like the control angle. Pauper Nightmare is the first open deck submission admitted to the Pauper Gauntlet season three. You are in, MagicMonkey

Last year i brought mono-red ping, this year i added black to give it more tools =)

  8. There is already two Rakdos decks out of 18 in the Gauntlet and I am expecting Power_T to submit Gary Busey (RB Flashback) so I am a bit reluctant to admit another RB deck at this point. I am also reluctant to let every deck from last year re-enter (only the top 10 have that automatic honor). Darker Ping is on hold for the time being.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. At some late point during Open Deck Submission every deck that is on hold will either receive a yes or no response or be put in a vote for entry into the Gauntlet (just like we did last year).

      Delete
    2. I also have this deck, since you already had 2 rakdos and i have never seen extort in gauntlet

      http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/08-11-15-extort-control/

    3. Extort was in the original Pauper Gauntlet. Here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxTsutM9RM8

      Delete
    4. Here is the original Gray Ghost deck tech with Deluxeicoff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb0i8vkwPAo The problem with Extort is that it is not a good enough mechanic for Pauper. It is just too slow. Gray ghost tried to be pretty quick but in the end it just did not really deliver. The extort deck can't be midrange because the midrange blue decks (such as Trinket) and the control decks are just super powerful in Pauper so any deck without a reliable card advantage engine just crumbles to them. In the end, I think I like the black red list better. Do you have any other deck?

      Delete
    5. Okay i put this deck up it is a fun original brew i use to play against new pauper players to show them some ridiculous things to do, not super cutthroat competitive, but fun.

      http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/cheaty-morph/

      Delete
    6. The Pauper Gauntlet is not all about being super competetive and not all about being casual BUT it is all about being fun and that deck sure looks like a ton of fun. Also super original! I like it! Cheaty Morph enters the Pauper Gauntlet as deck #28

      Delete
    7. Nate, if you could add a couply of comments about some ridicolous things to do with the deck that would be appreciated. I think I understand it but my brain will be swamped with up to 100 different decks so being extra clear helps a bit.

"Snow-Go Teachings?" In tne end, you decide the name, so I will go with what you decide. Both decks are in as #19 and #20 because of your long and consistent mastery of Teachings decks.

  13. Hi Dan,

I'll make one Patreon submission and 2 others of which I hope you'll take at least one:

    1) Simic Oracle (Patreon submission, a trinket/kitty deck):
    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/simic-oracle/

    2) Green Grifters (new and improved! still with lots of counters!):

    3) Flying Ninjas (just for fun but it does have some potential):
    http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/16-11-14-flying-ninjas/

If you want something different from Green Grifters but keeping with the counters theme, I have a Simic Proliferate deck based on Thrummingbird that is fun as well. Let me know.

    1. Who can resist Flying Ninjas? That makes me think of the wonderful Flying Dinosaurs deck from the 1st season (which also had ninjas actually). Flying Ninjas are in as deck #25. Simic Oracle is also in as deck #26. I prefer not to let every deck from S02 back in (especially with some new interesting decks), so Green Grifters is out. OK, let me see that Simic Proliferate deck (but I can't promise anything)

  14. Pig Trinket, Counter-Kitty and Gary Busey LD makes it into the Pauper Gauntlet S03 as decks 22, 23 and 24. I will probably complain about too few creatures more than once (I ran 16 at the end) but Infect (I will just call it Infect because it can only be built mono green and be real) enters the Gauntlet as deck #31.

    2. #29 is the correct number for Infect

      Delete
    3. It was my second competitive deck (but Paper). I agree that Pauper Infect is Mono Green, otherwise it's really weak, and I knew you would complain about few creatures, saw you doing this on some video (didn't record what), no problem, lol.

    4. Just felt I needed to warn you about my complaning in the future :) I do love my Rot Wolves as creature 13, 14 (and maybe 15 and 16). Or Cystbearer in certain metas

  20. Regarding Bugs and Pigs, I was going to suggest you to play Power_T's upgraded version that he's been successful with. Now I see that you let his version in anyway which I find weird, because having basically the same deck twice in the Gauntlet is usually not what you want. Anyway, I'll think about my Bugs and Pigs and will enter it later.

For now I'm going to send in another deck, since there's no Boros Kitty deck in here yet.

  21. Goblins ,Burn and Affinity NEED your help! Is it unclear what being a captain mean? Basically its the same as being a brewer - you just have to enter the deck and it is automatically in. 1. Please post a link to another site with the deck and SB plans. If everyone posts deck lists and plans here this way of submitting decks will be unmanageable. Use deckstats.net or another site that is not tappedout. The deck looks fun and it is rare to get good aggro deck submissions (that is classic Deluxe territory) so I am feeling good about the deck, but please do the external website submission. I have to have something to link to when I do the deck article on November 22nd (I can't post deck lists in that)

I understand you're dissapointed by Midnight Guard decks as they performed so poorly. With all due respect to the brewers, I think that's because the lists were not optimal. I made a quick draft what my version would look like. If you decide you like it, I'll take the time and write yet another playguide and sideboard guide. I think the deck is definitely worth it!

    5. Hello Dan,
Until when do you need a affinity list? I have a fling and battlerage -less affinity list that i could prepare for the gauntlet. But it would take a while to make it ready because I fly back home tomorrow from tokio. The philosophy of the list is a bit different because I try to flood the board with 4/4's and 2/2's and try 1st to make every threat count and 2nd to draw lots of cards. Tell me if you are interested or if you prefer the standard atog list.

      Delete
    6. I need it before the 19th. But the first one to do a proper post of an Affinity deck including Sb plan and mulligan advice gets the honor of being the captain. Any credentials with playing the deck helps too. The list has to be Daily Event playable but I am not going to meddle with individual card choices

  43. Hi,

I would like to submit my Elves deck, with which I have won several 8-man queues in the past week. I will not be available to pilot it, though :(

    http://deckstats.net/deck-8274406-dc568df6af0fedb5a6d2a2eac3fc7689.html

It's a pretty standard elves/Distant Melody deck. The only feature that's even mildly unusual is that the Viridian Longbows are in the main deck, where they make life miserable for most small-creature-based opponents.

Sideboarding guide is kind of rough, because I don't really think in terms of cut-and-dry sideboarding plans, but here is my stab at it:

    Delver:
    - 3 Lys Alana Huntmaster, 1 Distant Melody
    + 1 Aerial Volley, 1 Spidersilk Armor, 2 Wellwisher

    MBC:
    - 2 Viridian Longbow, 1 Wellwisher
    + 3 Spidersilk Armor

    Affinity:
    - 2 Viridian Longbow, 2 Elvish Visionary, 2 Sylvan Ranger
+ 3 Gleeful Sabotage, 1 Spidersilk Armor, 2 Magnify (save for Electrickery)
(if you die to Temur Battle Rage, bring in Moment's Peace)

    Stompy:
    - 2 Distant Melody, 2 Sylvan Ranger
    + 1 Moment's Peace, 3 Wellwisher

    Goblins:
    - 4 Distant Melody, 2 Sylvan Ranger
    + 3 Wellwisher, 3 Spidersilk Armor

    Burn:
    - 3 Viridian Longbow, 2 Distant Melody
    + 2 Magnify, 3 Wellwisher

    Esper Familiars:
    - 1 Wellwisher
    + 1 Aerial Volley

    Any blue-based control deck:
    -3 Viridian Longbow, 1 Wellwisher
+ Magnify/Spidersilk if they play red, Gleeful Sabotage if they have good artifacts/enchantments

    Kiln Fiend:
    - 2 Lys Alana Huntress, 4 Distant Melody, 3 Sylvan Ranger, 1 Island
    + 2 Magnify, 3 Spidersilk, 3 Moment's Peace, 3 Wellwisher
This a really tricky matchup, where you have to play around Electrickery while simultaneously not getting combo-killed.

    Hope it gets chosen!

    7. @jphsnake Good points! I added 2 bonded construct in the main and added 3 Cruel Feeding in the board (3 mana is often going to be way too expensive, and the alternate cost of 4 mana on feeding is pretty good in the deck)

  63. I submit my second list. I wish I could tune this more, but I'm not sure what else to do with it. It is, surprisingly, pretty competitive as it is and very different than anything else out there.

  64. The third (and likely final) list I would like to submit. I will work on a sideboard plan if it gets in. Other name options include Zendi-Khaaan! or just Temur Freed Combo.

    Thinking about doing:
    UR Prowess
    Mardu control
    Tireless Tribe combo
    A hot hottie deck
    and Mercenaries
if any of those would be of interest
